about the network
This network was created following the Work, Rest and Power online workshop of May 2021. This event was organised to cater for the growing academic interest in the relationship between architecture, space and political life. We realised that scholars in several disciplines were investigating the political role of domestic architecture and the overlapping use of private houses as both residential and "working" spaces by politicians and administrators. However, there were relatively few publications or conferences which specifically catered to this area.
The workshop was specifically designed as an interdisciplinary event, particularly aimed at scholars in fields such as Archaeology, Architecture, History and History of Art. It was hosted by the University of York and generously supported by a Collaborative Project Grant from the Humanities Research Centre. Dr Monolo Guerci of the University of Kent kindly agreed to give the keynote speech.
We were overwhelmed by the response to the event, which attracted speakers and delegates from around the world. We wanted to maintain this community of scholars and continue to facilitate the exchange of ideas and information across national and disciplinary boundaries. Hence, the Work, Rest and Power Network was born.
The network will share information principally through our Blog and our email newsletters. The Blog on this website will allow some of the conference speakers to share experiences of the workshop and provide information about their research. Our email newsletters will provide a forum through which to share details of publications, upcoming events and other relevant information.
If you would like to sign up for the newsletter, or if you require further informaton about the workshop or the network, please do not hesitate to contact us.
