about the convenors
The Work, Rest and Power Network was created by Kirsty Wright and Murray Tremellen, postgraduate researchers at the University of York. Having organised the successful Work, Rest and Power online workshop in May 2021 they decided to organise this network as a way to maintain the community of scholars which the workshop brought together.
Kirsty and Murray are currently working in the departments of History and History of Art respectively. They are studying the former buildings of St Stephen's College, Westminster, and their conversion for domestic use.

My research examines the conversion of the former St Stephen's College buildings in the Palace of Westminster into townhouses for the Auditor and Tellers of the Exchequer of Receipt. I take an architectural approach to administrative history to locate Exchequer activity within the palace, in government and the broader political topography of early modern London.

My thesis follows on chronlogically from Kirsty's, exploring the later history of the former college buildings from 1794, when they became the official residence of the Speaker of the House of Commons. I am investigating how the Speakers used their house to support their political aspirations, and how its design relates to the broader history of the early Gothic Revival. My research is funded by the Arts & Humanities Research Council via the White Rose College of Arts & Humanities.
